41CANTPZ94L Bosch 33618 Brute Tough 18-Volt Ni-Cad Cordless Drill/Driver Bosch 33618 Brute Tough 18-Volt Ni-Cad Cordless Drill/Driver Bosch’s Brute Tough line of cordless drill/drivers are designed and built from the inside out to offer the most power and durability possible. At the heart of this drill is a Bosch-built unibody power train that contains the motor, gearbox, and clutch in one contiguous unit for durability and the best alignment possible. The two-speed gearbox has large all-metal gears for strength, and offers a whopping 500 inch-pounds of torque in high-torque mode and up to 1,300 rpm in high-speed mode. The 18-volt motor has built-in overload protection and externally replaceable brushes to help extend its life. The drill also has a steel-reinforced collar to protect it in the event that it’s dropped on the chuck. While we don’t recommend dropping your tools off one-story buildings, Bosch claims this one can stand the abuse and keep working. The final layer of protection for the drill is its flexible ABS/Nylon-blend Duracell housing that protects the insides without cracking or shattering on impact. The drill also features a a strong reliable grip and a 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck with carbide teeth for one-handed bit changes. This model comes with two batteries, a one-hour charger, a bit holder, a snap hook, and a carrying case. –Brian Trinen
Customer Review: piece junk
Ok here is why to stay away from this company. Work for a utility company so wife bought the 24v version for me as a fathers day gift. Had it a whole week and the lock ring assembly blew apart while in a customers home. Took it back to Menards and they had to saw my bit off the drill. They replaced it and a month later the exact same thing happened to the replacement. So Bosch offering an “old drill” trade in on their site a while back. I email them to ask if they trade up their own junk explaining what happened with the other ones. No reply no “were sorry you paid $180 for our junk sure send it in” yeah right just no reply at all. I will never buy another tool with their name on it. Some may ask did I buy the right strength drill. My answer: it was supposed to be the industrial grade model. The only thing good is their fast battery charger. However what is a good battery worth without the drill working and in one piece.
Customer Review: good performer
i have had my bosch brute for a couple of years and it is a BRUTE! it handles tough jobs and has been dropped more times than a football at a Saints game. the battery life is very good and there is plenty of power…i used it for steel stud framing for a long time until i switched to impact drivers. now i mainly use the Brute for fastening TEK5 screws into thick red iron and screwing stud and track into purlins. it is a very strong and reliable drill. if i need to take one tool on a job for drilling and running fasteners…this is it

Customer Review: Wow, I have had a very different experience…
I purchased the set with the reciprocating saw, drill, flashlight, and circular saw. It came with a charger, two batteries, and a large carry bag. I added a couple extra batteries for $47 and plan to add a second charger for $29. I bought all my stuff from Home Depot.

I built a couple large birdhouses yesterday using 1 X 12 pine. The circular saw is definitely not your typical powerful corded Skil saw, but it did fine in the 1″ soft wood and it is very light and handy. I made a dozen super clean 12 inch cuts, sunk several dozen 1.5 inch wood screws, and cut a couple 1.5 inch and a couple .75 inch holes with spade bits, all on one battery. Still had juice left, but I switched out to another battery to finish the job.

Also used the drill on a small job at the neighbor’s house. He had some stripped out screws holding a small safe to the wall. When we couldn’t get the screw-out tools to pull the screws, I just threw in a carbide bit and drilled the heads right off the screws. Lots of power, very quick and easy.

I compared the price of batteries, chargers, etc… and found that this Ryobi series of tools is much more reasonably priced than other brands. For example, one DeWalt 18 volt battery is nearly $70. Two Ryobi 18 volt batteries are $47 and change. I realize we can get into a Chevy vs. Ford discussion, but for me, these Ryobi tools are a great choice for the homeowner looking for good tools at a decent price.
Customer Review: Be careful when you buy
I made the mistake of purchasing the cordless sander One + of Ryobi. These products look inexpesive on the web when you buy them, but Ryobi does not make readily available the battery or power charger as a separate purchase. If you buy one of these without the battery or charger, you’ll find you’re paying 3 times as much just to get the equipment to make it work.

Ryobi seems to have mastsered the bait and switch tactic. I would steer clear.

Customer Review: Not a good long-term everyday drill
I’m a professional remodeler and bought this drill in July of ‘07 to replace a 14.4v Porter Cable with two dead batteries (it was going to cost $120 just to replace the batteries, so I was able to sell the drill w/o batteries on craigslist and upgraded to this 18v).

First thing I noticed was that this drill is Heavy. Compared to the old PC 14v, it didn’t seem to offer much more performance for the added weight. At first, I figured the task light on the belt clip was just a gimmick, but it proved well thought out and useable. However, five months after owning this drill and using it on a day to day basis, the gears started grinding and the chuck wouldn’t spin. It’s not like I was trying to bore a tunnel through bedrock with a 5″ forstner bit, either. Hitachi has a great 5 yr. warranty program, so I took it in to be repaired. The parts were on backorder - turned out to need a armature (and something else…?) and it was a month before the drill was repaired. Using the drill the next day, the same part broke. I called Hitachi and they sent me a whole new replacement drill.

Now, just six months after using that drill, the same thing happened. I called Hitachi and demanded a refund. They said they wouldn’t do that, but that they would send me a “better drill”, the Lithium Ion version (”It’s a much better drill” they assured me). While the L-i version is slightly lighter weight - basically due to the lighter batteries - it’s basically the same drill, and honestly, I’m not expecting much.

Other considerations: the torque setting ring quit going past number 22, into Drill mode (or Hammerdrill mode!) - and well, that’s not good!

the crazy green rubber graphics began peeling off the old drill - an annoyance at first, then became an issue of comfort

the bit holder above the battery stores the bits so tight, I began pushing in bits only halfway just so I could get them back out

there’s a little cloth loop near the back of the battery - presumably to use as a way to dangle the drill from your wrist - which just ended up getting in the way every time I went to set the drill down, making me give the drill a little flick every time to get the cloth out of the way.

The price has come down on this drill since I bought it, but it’s color is a constant reminder of what I wasted on it - lots of green.
Customer Review: Long term review
I had Dewalt drills for 10 years. They were always good with the exception of the batteries. I switched to the Hitachi drill hoping for better batteries, I was disappointed. I work construction and use the drill everyday. I will admit the drill gets alot of hard use. The first thing I noticed about the Hitachi drill is that it has quite a bit less torque in the high setting than the Dewalt. My drill is now 1 year old and no longer works. For the last 10 months the drill would get hot real fast. After drilling a 5/8″ hole, with a new bit, through 10″ of wood, the drill now only works in reverse. This time I will spend my money on a Dewalt. This drill would probably work for most people but if you do construction for a living then you should pass on this drill. The hammerdrill option worked well. The light was too dim to be useful.
